Master Sergeant James Thomas (JT) Wentling, USMC was sworn in as MSgt by flying to Iwo Jima and climbing Mount Suribachi. He had his wetdown at favorite pub Molly Malone's, downtown Hiroshima with all his Marines & Peers.  He had been mulling over how he wanted to be "officially" sworn-in as MSgt and always wanted to go to Iwo Jima.  He didn't know if it were possible because the C12 crews would have to flight plan for this in the middle of their already busy schedule.  So this past May, one week before the flight, he managed to pull it together and could only invite few folks on the small plane.  He chose his Captain to conduct the ceremony, and 2 of his closest friends here to be a part of it, knowing this would be a once-in-a-lifetime chance for any Marine stationed here.  Along with the photographer and crew chiefs.  They left really early one morning in civilian clothes and bag lunches, prepared to hike Mt. Surabachi.  Once they reached the peak (no easy task), they changed into uniform (carried in backpacks) and JT swore-in at the memorial.  Then they beat feet down the mountain to see the famous black sand and had to hurry to the plane which was due to fly back to Iwakuni.  The entire island is a memorial, as you saw in the photos, the ships are untouched at the beach.  Brandon and Steve, his friends that were there to witness, are so thankful for the experience.  It was a rare one indeed.  JT is again humbled and doesn't even air his news with anyone.  It's just his way.
